The server is directly connected to the Internet through a Cisco Catalyst Switch on multi-homed circuits pointing to four separate Internet backbone providers. Translation: fast, reliable access.
Great Lakes Region is presently providing server services for CAP regions, wings and squadrons across America and abroad. The goal is to continue providing such services so long as it is feasible to do so. The dedicated server operation is 100% supported by voluntary contributions from CAP members and units.
Services That Can Be Provided
CAP Domain Names. * Without Internic or domain name charges, units within GLR can often be assigned a URL such as:
http://ohwg.cap.gov/sqdnname
Sometimes, if required to do so for technical reasons, we may need to configure the domain name with the unit name first, i.e.
http:(sqdnname).ilwg.cap.gov.
Units outside of GLR may also opt for a CAP.GOV domain name such as:
http://nhwg.cap.gov or http://sqdnname.nhwg.cap.gov
These virtual domain options are accomplished by using HTTP 1.1 mapping.
E-Mail Alias Forwarding.* You can provide a list of your unit members e-mail addresses and automatic e-mail forwarding can be established.
Autoresponder. * If you have a text file that you would like automatically sent to someone who sends an e-mail to a particular e-mail address.
FTP account . You can update your site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Listserver (sending e-mail to one address forwards to all e-mail addresses your unit places on the listserver list.) *
* Web page support that you are not likely to find on the free public service web pages.
The Costs
Host a CAP.GOV domain for a CAP units web pages with e-mail forwarding, Autoresponder, and 24 hour FTP access: $20.00 per year contribution is requested.
